We’ve been mulling that proposal for the Federal government to offer an inflation-adjusted lifetime SPIA, reported in the New York Times last week.

For folks considering how to best invest for retirement, that would be an ideal baseline for best-portfolio comparison. After zeroing in on a portfolio the investor considers best for the dollar plan, goals, and priorities – found the Portfolio Pathfinder way, of course — compare that portfolio to the Federal SPIA. In most cases the portfolio will offer great probabilities of doing far better – but also some risk of doing worse.

Right now, the closest thing is SPIAs from insurance companies. That means facing some risk of an insurance company’s inability to keep paying all the way, and the $100k limitations on backing in various states. And most of those SPIA purveyors don’t even offer inflation adjustment (or even mention inflation!).

For the Times piece on the Federal SPIA proposal, click here.
